Carmen's Opinion

Before:
Culture influences a person's actions and behaviors because the way you are raised is, in a sort, the way you live the rest of your life. I was/am raised to believe that you can never spend enough money on education, but you can waste the money you spend on education. If I ever had to choose between being education, or not being education, I would choose to be educated. At the same time, I could waste money on my education. I would spend the money on education, but I would make sure the I am gaining a better understanding on the topic I am studying.

After:
At the beginning of the short story chapter I thought that culture influences a person’s actions and behaviors because the way you are raised is, in a sort, the way you live the rest of your life. I still agree with my beginning statement, although I now understand how large of an influence time and circumstances have on your culture. An example of a story that helped me realize this is “The Bet”. In “The Bet” the young lawyer makes a bet with the banker that he will stay in confinement with no social interactions. If the young lawyer stayed in confinement with no social interactions, and was just allowed to read books, play music, write letters, and smoke, then the banker would have to pay the lawyer 2 million dollars. The 15 years in confinement helped the lawyer figure out what his values were, which lead to him finding what influenced his culture, and what his culture was.
